How do you recover from broken confidence?

10500427_10101525169340389_1677924975271449949_n

“Been torn apart.
Got so many scratches and scars.”
-Ms. Natasha B.

Ideally, confidence is something that should be steady, but experience tells us otherwise. 🙂

How do you pick yourself up again after you’ve taken a hit?
How do you recover from a bruised ego?

We will recover…

PS: This isn’t a cry for attention. This isn’t even something I’m necessarily feeling at the moment. Just an interesting part of the human condition I wanna explore a lil’ bit.

Unspeakably Beautiful

That’s the only way I know how to describe this.

I fell in love when I first heard it six years.

And it has stayed in my heart since then.

Thank you John.

unspeakably beautiful…

A Poem Inspired by Jack Johnson’s “Flake.”

Screen shot 2014-07-29 at 9.31.22 PM

“It seems to me that ‘maybe’
pretty much always means no.”

For heaven’s sake,
don’t be a flake.
Follow through
on what you say you’ll do.
Don’t let people down,
don’t give ’em reasons to frown.
Lemme get back on track
with the wise words from Jack,
“When [you say you’re] gonna try,
it might not work because of other ties”
That’s a broken promise
which is basically a lie.
So “please, please, please” don’t let my heart break.
Don’t be careless, and DON’T BE A FLAKE!
🙂
PS: These are not sentiments that I’m feeling currently. Just like the idea. And I just heard that Jack Johnson song and whipped out this little piece (which is definitely not my finest)

It is not good that Katherine should be alone.

It hurts to be lonely.
But it’s actually good.
It means you desire companionship,
Just like you should.

“..It is not good that

[wo]man should be alone.”
-Genesis 2:18

I saw this live 4 years ago.

I’ve thought about it everyday since then.

The monologue is out of this world.

I’M PERFECTLY LONELY!

🙂

it is not good that Katherine should be alone

It is not good that

Katherine should be alone

There’s a Lot I Still Don’t Know: A Poem

there's a lot I still don't know

There’s a lot I still don’t know
Still got a ways to go
Haven’t quite figured out
What this thing is all about

It’s exciting, but also intimidating
It’s enslaving, yet somehow liberating
To crash and burn, to fail when I try
And choke on that slice of humble pie

There’s ups and downs on this bumpy ride
All I can do is take it in stride
I have to continue, got no choice but to fight,
So I may as well try to enjoy this life!
🙂

PS: There’s not one, not two, but THREE John Mayer quotes in the above poem.
Did you find them?

“Can’t be creatively excessive, nor creatively malnourished” (a poem on struggling to keep it all together!)

Been doing some thinkin’, and I’ve got a confession:
Sometimes my interests turn into obsessions
But I can’t neglect them either, don’t want to “let ’em slip away”
(and there’s my John Mayer quote for the day!)

Like, I write out my heart when I should be asleep
Or sometimes don’t touch my guitar for weeks
Guess I’m still tryin’ to figure out exactly how to ration
How much time I give to feed my passion

Can’t be creatively excessive, not creatively malnourished
Gotta find that sweet spot and not get discouraged
We’ve heard it said to practice moderation
Maybe that’ll help with this mild frustration

So HOW do I do it? That’s the big question
(if ya’ll have ideas, I’m open for suggestions!)
No hard and fast answer, no perfect solution
Guess I’ll just keep on tryin’ to BALANCE what I’m doing.

Kate is on Hiatus.

Wow, it’s July 22, and my last post was on the 17th.  I think that’s the longest I’ve ever gone!  Well, a lot has been happening around here.  And I’ve had to take a bit of a break.  Not for lack of inspiration, mind you.  Just trying to keep it all together.  But I’ll be back.  Promise!

Kate is

on Hiatus.

Writing fiction isn’t my thing…

Screen shot 2014-07-17 at 10.40.43 PM

I’m not super big into writing fiction. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I wrote something fictional. I guess I’m not patient enough to create characters and settings that tell a great story and also express some important truth. I kinda just wanna cut to the chase and get to the meat. Hopefully, my stuff is still mildly interesting even if it’s not some action-packed romance with a problem, climax, and resolution.

..
Fiction is an art that I deeply appreciate,
but it’s never been something I like to create.

A light in your eyes.

screen-shot-2013-08-29-at-11-34-44-pm

“There’s a light in your eyes that keeps shining,
like a star that can’t wait for the night.”
-Led Zeppelin

“A sacred light comes to our eyes
when we have a personal bond with our loving Heavenly Father…”
-James Faust (of TCOJCOLDS; deceased)

“There’s a light in your eyes that is pure.”
-John Mayer

The light of the body is the eye
if therefore thine eye be single,
thy whole body shall be full of light.
– Jesus Christ (Matthew 6:22)

You never can win if you’re spread too thin (a poem about not over-doing it).

You never can win
If you’re spread too thin
Think before you begin;
don’t burn out again

Strategize your effort
Focus your endeavor
Remember more’s not always better
even if you’re a go-getter

As of late,
Had a little too much on my plate
Can’t keep going at this rate
Think it’s time to re-evaluate

So whether it’s career, love, or any other phase
Think carefully and prayerfully ’bout how you spend your days!

Don’t be too forward, but don’t be too subtle either.
Don’t be too loud, but don’t be too quiet.
Be bold but not overbearing.
Moderation in all things.
Speak enough.

If you come to a potluck, don’t come empty-handed!

Screen shot 2014-07-13 at 6.11.20 PM

You know those people who crash potlucks and don’t bring anything? (I admit, I’ve done it before, but I’ve repented of my ways) Don’t be one of those people, okay? Just don’t.

Give unto others
is what Jesus commanded.
So if you come to a potluck
Don’t come empty-handed!

I Boast in the Lord.

Screen shot 2014-07-13 at 4.20.28 PM

How ’bout a spiritual post?

I marvel when I think how far I’ve come in the last year. How much I’ve accomplished and progressed, and most importantly how I made it through the dark. But I don’t take the credit. To borrow the words of Ammon,

“I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom…therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in His strength I can do all things.”                                      -(Alma 26: 11-12)

What things has the Lord done for you

that you boast about?

3 Things to Consider when Looking for a New Job.

Screen shot 2014-07-11 at 11.12.52 PM

Hello,

Counselor Wilkinson here.  So glad you could join me today as we briefly discuss job options.  My experience over the last few months has taught me a thing or two about this whole career thing, and I felt it only fitting that I bestow upon my dear readers a tidbit of wisdom that, although small and simple, has done wonders for me as I’ve tried my best to navigate this game.  So here we go!  The 3 main aspects to consider when deciding on a job are:

1)  What you do

2)  Who you work with and work for

3)  $ Money $

Those 3 points will make or break you.  And here’s the clincher.  You have to like at least 2/3 to be happy and successful.  So aim for 66% or higher, and you’ll do great!

Get your kicks,

on Route 66!

Everything comes back to John Mayer.

Everything.

🙂

Sometimes I feel haunted by mistakes of my past…

Sometimes I feel haunted by mistakes of my past.
Terror-stricken, I try to find a way to get away fast.
But there’s really no purpose, there’s no need to run.
‘Cuz I can’t change what’s happened; what’s done is done.

But it’s no good to keep carrying burdensome guilt.
Even in adversity, a flower was meant to blossom, not wilt.
So I’ll expel the dark struggles and sins from my soul
Because through the Atonement, I will be whole.

What the Bible (kinda) says about social media.

Self-aware vs. Self-absorbed

Self-aware vs. self-absorbed

(such a fine line between the two…)

“Know Thyself” (Plato)
“Whosoever will lose his[/her] life… shall find it” (Matthew 16:25)

“Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking less about yourself.”

 -Dieter Uchtdorf

Are you self-absorbed?

Mormons ARE Christian (and people believe it now!)

Screen shot 2014-07-08 at 1.03.18 PM

From what I gather, the public myth that members of TCOJCOLDS (Mormons) are not Christian is all but abolished. Wahoo!

If any of ya’ll are on the fence, I challenge you to a game of New Testament scripture chase. That should settle things once and for all 🙂 (hope that doesn’t sound cocky!)

Mormons ARE Christian.

And people believe it now!

There’s no Sunday school lesson to tell you what to do when you stop believing in God.

10488382_10101490293716419_5795729967856134518_n10409383_10101490295557729_8835168965101698042_n

In my experience (and in those of other people I’ve known), one of the worst things about losing your faith (particularly if you are/ were LDS) is that no one ever taught you how to deal with this. There was no Sunday school lesson about what to do when you stopped believing or God; no manual on how to cope when you had the sickening realization that everything you’d ever been taught was a lie. You are in unfamiliar territory, unarmed and stripped of anything you once had in your arsenal of spiritual self-defense, and you have no idea how to navigate your way through this kind of pain and confusion. There is literally nothing that could have prepared you for this.

My heart goes out to anyone and everyone who has ever gone through this experience. It is hell.

I would encourage my friends who ARE believers to acknowledge and honor the pain and struggles of our brothers and sisters who, for whatever reason, are no longer (fully) part of our religious community. They need us, and not just as people who want them to come back (although I do believe that’s important). And perhaps we need we need them, as they give us an opportunity to take our ultimate value of unconditional charity off the shelf of abstraction and put it into action.

As my boss Julie has said,Let’s practice radical compassion.
Definitely.

The Mormon Church is better than other churches.

Image

“You think the Mormon Church is better than other churches!

(got this in an email recently)

Um, duh. Why would I be a member (an active one, too!) if I didn’t believe there was something unique, even something superior about the LDS faith?

It’s not arrogant to prefer your church/ philosophy/ belief system over others…

It is common sense.

I do not believe the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true because I’m a member…

I’M A MEMBER BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT IS TRUE!

The Mormon Church is better than other churches.
